It’s the end of April and we are ready for warm weather and spring flowers. Let’s get those perennial beds in shape. Most perennials do not take much work, I’ve made a list of simple things you can do to get your beds ready to flourish!
- Remove the dead debris from around the plant. The debris is a great insulator for the plant over the winter, but it is time to remove it. This will allow sunlight and water to penetrate more efficiently.
- Work in some good old compost. The plant will thank you with beautiful flowers later in the summer.
- Put down a fresh layer of mulch. This will help with weed control and moisture retention.
- Give the plant a thorough watering.
Other helpful notes:
- Perennial grasses need to be pruned down before new growth has begun.
- If you have evergreen perennials, i.e. creeping phlox, make sure to prune out any dead areas.
- Be patient with them, some perennials take longer to emerge than others. It may be helpful to put markers by the plants that emerge later.
- Spring is a great time to divide those perennials that are overgrown. When you see the eyes of the plant, (see pic. below), your plants are ready to be divided.
